In a year where there was talk about a GTA franchise reboot, it’s a bit disconcerting that the GTA series never made it to the big screen.
With the release of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar has made some bold statements about its ambitions for a reboot, and one of those is that it will not only be returning to the GTA franchise, but also the GTA: Chinatown Wars universe.
While Rockstar did not specify what would be happening with the reboot, they did indicate that the game would be a new take on the series.
That’s not exactly a surprise considering the franchise was first created in 1993, and there’s no indication that it’s going to be revisited any time soon.
What Rockstar is hinting at is that there will be an entirely new storyline for the franchise, a storyline that will take place in the GTA universe.
It’s been hinted at before, but it’s never been explicitly confirmed.
So far, there have been no indications of what the story will be, but Rockstar could be referring to an entirely different game.
As you can see from the above picture, GTA: CHINESE WARS is clearly the first GTA game to take place on Earth, so there is a distinct possibility that the G-series universe will take the same route as GTA: SWAT and GTA IV, but without all of the familiar characters.
So there’s a good chance that we could see Grand Theft Autos take place elsewhere.
Of course, that could change, and it’s certainly possible that Grand Theft Sports, which was created to bring back GTA: Vice City, could be a possible new take.
It would make sense to keep GTA:SWAT as a standalone title, and possibly use it as the template for GTA:CYBER, although it could also be a standalone GTA game, but not GTA:GTA.
While the G series has been going for so long, it has not been a huge success, and the games that have followed have often been poorly received.
Rockstar’s willingness to make the bold statement that the franchise would not be returning seems to have made a lot of fans very happy.
It’s a shame that it wasn’t a real possibility to return to the series, because it would have been so much fun to see Rockstar continue to make great games.
But at the end of the day, it seems like it was always going to come back, and this announcement is a good start to making that happen.
