Pittsburgh (Reuters) – Disney has been granted a permit to build a movie theater for its upcoming “The Princess and the Frog” movie in Pittsburgh, local media reported.
The permit was issued on Friday by the city’s Planning and Development Commission, and it will take effect next year.
The theater is scheduled to open in 2019.
The property, which was already under development, is adjacent to the existing Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Pirates of a Caribbean park.
Disney’s “Pirates of the Black Pearl” movie theater is shown in this undated handout photo provided by Walt Disney Studios.
The theater, in the former Town Hall Theater building at 813 North Main Street, is expected to open later this year and will be Disney’s first movie theater outside the United States.
It will be the first new movie theatre in Pittsburgh in more than a decade, said Josh Pate, a spokesman for the Pittsburgh Board of Supervisors.
The new theater will also include an amphitheater.
“The Pirates of Pirates of America are back and we’re excited to welcome the Pirates of The Black Pearl to our City,” Pirates co-owner Jeff Williams said in a statement.
“We look forward to a terrific experience for our guests.”
Disney, which has produced more than 400 feature films in Pittsburgh since opening its theme park in Pittsburgh a decade ago, is one of several companies seeking to capitalize on the city and surrounding area’s moviegoing market.
In 2016, the Walt Disney Co. began building a theater for the upcoming “Cars 3” in the city, which is scheduled for a 2019 opening.
