New Zealand’s National Rugby League has been joined by three new clubs.
The Auckland-based club Rugby League NZ is joining the AFL2.
It will be joined by four other clubs that have already signed contracts with the AFL.
Rugby League NZ will be based at Auckland’s Eden Park.
It has played in the National League since 2013 and has a record of 16 wins and three losses.
The New Zealand Rugby League says the AFL is “excited to welcome Rugby League to the AFL”.
The new clubs will play a three-game home and away season, with their full home and road schedule due to be announced in the coming weeks.
The NRL is also taking a “hard look” at the AFL’s future in New Zealand, and is now looking to expand its footprint in the country.
The AFL says it’s looking to grow its footprint around the country to meet demand.
“The AFL is in the midst of a transition to a digital era and we’re looking to work with NRL clubs to further expand our digital footprint to meet this needs,” AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

Last year, the NRL joined the AFL with a deal that included a deal to expand the club’s NRL membership from 10,000 to 18,000 members.NRL’s chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the NRL is looking to play an increasing number of games in the AFL over the next few seasons.”
It’s a real challenge and we are delighted that NRL clubs have agreed in principle to join our AFL2 competition,” Demetrisou said.
Rural players have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the competition, and are unhappy with the fact that the AFL doesn’t have a full-time head coach and has no national representative.”
They have done a great job with the national teams,” Demets said.
The National Rugby league will be playing an additional three home and two away games this season.
