The New York Red Bulls are hoping to be the first team to win back-to-back Supporters’ Shields.
The Red Bulls’ defense has been one of the main reasons for their success.
The club won the Supporters’ Shield in 2014 and 2015 and was a regular in MLS Cup Playoffs for most of the year.
But the Red Bulls were eliminated from the playoffs last year in the conference finals after a 2-1 loss to the New York City FC.
The season before that, the Red Bull defense was so dominant that the club claimed a Supporters’ Cup championship.
The Red Bulls had the league’s second-best defense last year and finished third in goals allowed.
The defense finished second to the Colorado Rapids in goals against average.
The team also was one of only two teams to post at least one shutout in each of the first three games of the season.
The 2017 season ended with the Red Bank Stadium crowd cheering for the team to clinch the Supporters Cup, which would go to the Philadelphia Union.
However, the Union would ultimately finish with a 10-point win over the Chicago Fire.
The team finished with the worst defensive record in MLS last year with five shutouts, which ranks 25th in the league.
The defense was also a major reason why the Red Stars missed out on the playoffs.
The organization finished with just two wins from the first 10 games.
The squad’s defense also finished second in the MLS in goals conceded with six.
The red-hot defense was led by the return of midfielder Lloyd Sam, who was acquired in the offseason after an injury to Clint Dempsey.
The return of the Red Revolution’s leading scorer, Brad Davis, helped the Red Red Bulls earn their first playoff berth since 2012.
